Lewis Pragasam has garnered international and critical acclaim as one of Asia's leading drum/percussion exponents and an innovator of new trends in World Music. Lewis is the founder and moving spirit of the pioneering ASIABEAT project, whose recordings and performance are now legendary in the merging of Asian and contemporary music styles. The project was conceptualised in 1979.
The ASIABEAT project has released 5 recordings worldwide since 1982, namely: ASIABEAT (CBS), Dare to Dream (Independent), Spirit of the People (Pony Canyon), Drumusique (Pony Canyon) and Monsoon (Pony Canyon). The project has performed at festivals all over the world including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Perth Festival of Music (Australia) and Nigata Cultural Festival (Japan).
Aside from his ASIABEAT project he has performed and/ or recorded with numerous internationally reknowned artistes- Paul Jackson, Ernie Watts, Billy Cobham, Arthur Lipner, Jeff Berlin, Randy Crawford, Bob James, Nathan East, Jack Lee&Asia*Nergy, John Neptune, RandyBernsen, Toninho Horta, Andy Sheppard, Ottmar Liebert, Guru Karakkudi Mani, Kazumi Watanabe, Eugene Pau, Charles Blenziq, Mike Keneally, Anthony Curtis, Keichi Osamu, Adela Dalto, Tony Levin, Umezu amongst others.
Lewis has performed major festivals around the world including a Royal Command Performance for HRH Prince Charles(Prince Trust Concert) in Edinburgh.
He has organised and produced numerous percussion festivals all over South East Asia, working with a variety of percussion exponents and groups-Yaya Diallo(Africa), Pete lockett(UK), Shanxi drummers(China), Parry¡¦s Pan Steel Drum orchestra(Trinidad), Tokyo Dagaki Taiko Drum Group(Japan), Manipuri Drummers&Dancers (India), Drum Drum &the siale Dancers(Australia/PNG), Samulnori(Korea), Tepak Rampak(Indonesia), ¡¥Guardians of the Flame¡¦ Mardi Gras Indians(USA), Boterekwa Drum&Dance Group(Zimbabwe) as well as other percussion ensembles from Asia.
