The Early Years:
When I was 12 years old, I saw an advertisement in the newspaper about drum lesson at Gallery Guitar in Ampang and I forced my mom to sign me up. The lesson didn’t last that long because they kepy changing instructors and I stopped the lesson after a couple of months.
However, I learned the basics about drumming as well as some of the core theories and was able to experiment with different rolls and different beats.
During high school, my friends and I started a band and we would go jamming at least once a month. We played mostly covers and didn’t really involve in anything serious.
Defining Moments:
When I started college, my interest in music was sparked and I was looking for a place to learn a new instrument. Coincidently, the college I was studying at (HELP College) had a Center for Performing Arts Department and I went there to take up guitar lesson.
Just before signing up for guitar lesson though, Mr. Lewis Pragasam (who was in charge of the Center for Performing Arts), invited some of my friends and I into his studio to watch him practice. After watching Mr. Lewis dominate the drum set for the next 30 minutes, I straight away signed up for the lesson with the drum legend.
It was during the next 2 years that my interest for drumming turned into a passion.
Mr. Lewis saw my interest and willingness to learn and includes me and several other students for his percussion project. We would play at launch and private functions with Asiabeat and eventually became a twenty-plus man percussion unit.
The Band:
Around 2001, Hafiz invited me for a jamming session with some other friends and we actually had a really good time so we kept jamming week after week. Eventually, One Buck Short was formed and we joined The Battle of the Bands and reached to the final stage.
From there we started playing really small function for fun and after about a year; we changed the band’s line up and got focused on the direction of the band.
Currently, our debut album “ Halal & Loving It ” is scheduled for release in late July or early August 2007.
Until today, One Buck Short has played over 700 shows in the span of about 5 years. From underground gigs to proms, to rock festivals in Malaysia and Singapore, as well as being selected as the opening acts for Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte.
